Labyrinth Day 38

September 21, 2008

Port of Peninsula on the Willapa Bay, Nachotta.

Last day of summer. Nice making and walking a labyrinth in the sand again!  We’ve kept our small wooden boat, June, here at the Port for the last few weeks.  We pulled her out this evening, so I drew and walked a three-circuit labyrinth at the small beach near the Port.

What isn’t pictured here is Anne running back and forth with armloads of driftwood.  The tide was on its way in, and with Anne and I both working we barely finished placing the driftwood before the tide began washing away the labyrinth.  It was crazy hard racing to get it done.

Labyrinth Day 28

Leadbetter Point State Park

Two “firsts” today.  I made my first labyrinth at Leadbetter, a seven-circuit.  And while there, I made my first original-pattern labyrinth.  Nothing fancy, but original.

I visited Maya Lin’s Confluence Project installation, Cedar Circle, for the first time today.  The installation is in Cape Disappointment State Park where the Columbia River flows into the Pacific.  The Cedar Circle installation is just beyond the small dusty patch where I drew a seven circuit labyrinth in very dry sand, the lines barely visible from the onset.  Maya Lin’s installation is at once modest and profound, subtle and sacred, honoring and inspiring.  Long silvery driftwood trunks are placed standing up around an old-growth cedar stump, ancient with countless rings and circles. Cedar Circle is just one part of a  larger, multifaceted installation.  The project website is www.confluenceproject.org/.  After spending time in Cedar Circle I seized the moment to make and walk a small labyrinth that disappeared as I walked it.
